Are you worried about job security? With unemployment rates only seeming to rise, whether an individual can ride the tide be able to keep their job may be outside of their hands. With corporations looking to downsize, the world of work can often feel uncertain and it is subject to sudden changes.

There may be signals that the typical employee can be cognizant of in terms of a likely redundancy situation. Recognising indicators that your position may be in jeopardy can be useful in terms of managing the situation and perhaps deciding whether to show value to the firm or to exit early.

Decreased Digital Interaction With Leaders

Rozek says: “A significant decrease in interaction with leadership could signal trouble. With the rise of remote work and digital collaboration platforms like Slack, Microsoft Teams, or Zoom, you have to watch out for this on digital channels as well as physical ones.’ If you notice fewer direct messages or invitations to meetings from supervisors, it may indicate that you’re being gradually phased out. In today’s digital age, reduced engagement on these platforms can serve as an early warning sign of impending termination.”

Increased Automation Of Job Tasks

The advent of automation and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies has transformed many industries, leading to the automation of routine tasks and processes.

Here Rozek notes: “If you observe an increase in the automation of your job responsibilities, such as the introduction of new software or systems designed to streamline tasks you previously handled manually, it may suggest that your role is being reevaluated or phased out.”

Increased Scrutiny Or Micromanagement

A sudden increase in scrutiny or micromanagement from superiors can also be a warning sign that a job may be at risk.

Rozek cautions: “If you find yourself being closely monitored, subjected to frequent performance evaluations, or given an excessive amount of feedback, it could indicate that your supervisors are looking for reasons to justify terminating your employment.”

He adds: “When you experience heightened levels of scrutiny or micromanagement, it’s crucial to remain composed and seek clarity. Understanding the reasons behind this behaviour can help you address any concerns or shortcomings proactively.’”

What To Do If You Think Your Job Is On The Line

As unsettling as it may be to confront the possibility of being fired, Rozek advises that it is “essential to remain proactive and take steps to address any concerns or prepare for the worst.”

Furthermore, if you notice any of the aforementioned signs, Rozek suggests: “It’s important to communicate openly with your superiors and seek feedback on your performance. Take the initiative to address any areas of improvement and demonstrate your commitment to the organisation.”

Additionally, Rozek advises employees: “Explore opportunities for professional development or additional training to enhance your skills and value to the company. And if the situation does escalate to the point of termination, it’s crucial to maintain professionalism and leave on good terms, as your reputation can play a significant role in your future career endeavours.”
