Dave Lee talks about his YouTube series ‘Cardboard Sessions’

Dave Lee chatted about his YouTube series “Cardboard Sessions,” and the digital age.

Idea for this digital series

On the idea for the origin of this series, Lee said, “We built the Cardboard Strat and the Cardboard Drums for a show called Cardboard Chaos back in 2015 and 2019.”

“After the episodes were shot they were put in storage,” he said. “During the pandemic, I thought once this shit is over let’s pull those out of storage and get artists to play them.”

“We’ll film it all, record it in a studio and see how it goes. We’re now on our third season. It is pretty cool,” he exclaimed.

On his daily inspirations as a content creator and entrepreneur, he said, “Making things I’m passionate about. I love working on projects that bring people through the process or make you feel like you’re in the room.”

The digital age

On being a part of the digital age, now with streaming, technology and social media being so prevalent, he said, “

“It feels good for the most part,” he admitted. “I enjoy the ease of being able to connect, and the DIY opportunities are endless if you’re up for it. I also very much enjoy disconnecting from all of it.” 

Regarding his use of technology in his daily routine, Lee said, “The simplest answer is, it’s the ultimate connector. The quickness and ease in which you can bring people and ideas together instantly using your technology of choice is bananas.” 

Next five years with ‘Cardboard Sessions’

On his future plans with “Cardboard Sessions,” he shared, “I see more artists coming through for sure. I also see an opportunity for artists to write songs with other artists they normally don’t play with.”

“The episode with Reignwolf and Brad Wilk ended up becoming a single called ‘The Woods.’ I would like to that happen more,” he said.

Advice for young and aspiring content creators and entrepreneurs

For young and aspiring content creators and entrepreneurs, he said, “Start making things now. Don’t wait for the perfect idea to come through, or the right people to do it with.”

“Whether it’s a YouTube series, being in a band, or a podcast. Just start now. Everything will start to fall in place if it’s a good idea. And if it isn’t, you’ll learn a lot from the experience and use that in your next great idea,” he acknowledged.

Success

On his definition of the word success, Lee said, “Success for me, is getting to that magical place of knowing, this is enough. It’s human nature to want to keep piling on, push harder, achieve more. As Lao Tzu says ‘when you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you’.” 

Closing thoughts on ‘Cardboard Sessions’

Lee remarked about “Cardboard Sessions,” “We want people to see a little bit of the process of making music at the artist level. That creative spark that leads to a magic riff, or special piece of music.”

“I want viewers to find some nugget in each episode that makes them feel like – damn, I can do this, or I want to learn how to do this,” he concluded.
