Canadian country artist Dallas Smith chatted about his latest eponymous studio country album.

Song selection approach for the CD

On the song selection process for the new album, Smith said, “It was just me trying to expand the different sounds on the record. It was a matter of creating a palette of different influences and different styles in these songs to create more of an interesting live show.”

“I am really proud of this record and I am excited to see more people discovering it. I hope people get to connect with it. I hope to be able to play in more places and territories,” he added.

“This album has rejuvenated my love for playing live,” he admitted. “I hope it has something for every emotion; a little bit of everything. To be able to do new songs and watch the discovery process happen is a really great part of being an artist.”

Favorite songs on the album

For the time being, the listed the opener “Use Me” as his favorite. “This is the lead-off song and it almost didn’t make the record,” he admitted. “It was great to see the final product and know that my gut instinct was right. There is something special about that song, and it ended up being the lead-off track. It was kind of cool how that happened.”

Smith described “CRZY” as a special song, and no matter how they play it live (regular or acoustic), he noted that it has a “cool energy.”

The digital age

On being an artist in the digital age, he said, “I think it’s great. It is definitely different than it was a decade ago but the access to music is fantastic. It is great to release new songs from future projects, that’s a neat thing to be able to do.”

Dallas Smith: The multiple CCMA winner

He opened up about winning the “Male Artist of the Year” four times at the Canadian Country Music Awards (CCMAs). “It is always great to be invited to the party but the best thing about that is getting up there to thank everybody that helped you get up there,” he said.

Dream duet choices in music

Smith listed Lainey Wilson and Hailey Benedict as his dream female duet choices in music. “Hailey Benedict is a very talented girl,” he said.

Stage of his life

On the title of the current chapter of his life, he said, “Acceptance.” “Accepting where my life has taken me… the good, the bad, and the ugly,” he said. “I’m focusing on moving forward.”

Success

Regarding his definition of the word success, Smith said, “The minute you enjoy what you’ve created, that’s success.” “When you are proud of what you’ve done, accomplished or created, that’s a successful feeling,” he said.
